Clean Water Reaches Three More Villages
Last month, Udama Initiative completed the drilling and commissioning of three new boreholes serving communities that previously relied on hand-dug wells and seasonal streams for their water. Families in these areas often walked several kilometers each day, a task that fell mostly on women and children and kept many of them out of school or unpaid work.
With the new boreholes in place, each fitted with a solar-powered pump and a community-managed maintenance fund, residents now have year-round access to clean, safe water within a short walk of their homes. Local health workers report the change is already being felt: fewer cases of waterborne illness, and more children arriving at school on time.
Built With the Community, Not Just For It
From the outset, Udama Initiative worked with village leadership committees to choose the borehole sites, agree on a fair maintenance contribution, and train two residents per site as pump caretakers. This approach keeps the investment sustainable long after our field team moves on to the next project.
